About YCI HerStart
YCI’s HerStart’s team and partners in Ghana are located in the Northern and Upper East cities of Tamale and Bolgatanga. The program began in 2020 and will be supporting thousands of young women on their social entrepreneurship journeys with training, financing, and mentorship.
YCI Ghana currently works closely with two local partners for HerStart program implementation – which you can read more about below. These partners co-lead and participate in several program elements, including supporting SPARK, SEED, and GROW training programs for women entrepreneurs, the Partnership Sustainability Plans (PSPs) to further build their organizational capacity and share their strengths, the Partnership Innovation Funds (PIFs) to support specific projects, and the fellowship program!
About BTU
Bolgatanga Technical University is located in the Sumbrungu municipality of Bolgatanga. This municipality is situated in the Upper East Region.
The university was founded in 1999, and in 2020 was converted to a Technical University by the Technical Universities Amendment Act 2020. BTU runs over twenty-five different tertiary programmes, providing career-focused and skill-based education, research, and training. BTU places emphasis on providing opportunities for hands-on experience and entrepreneurship development. The university is dedicated to training and promoting young people, and has extensive experience providing opportunities for marginalized women to receive access to education at the technical and vocational level.
BTU’s catchment area is home to many low-income communities, so most of their students qualify for public scholarships. Approximately 2,000 students attend the school, with about 50% being women.
